SBG6580 + Time Warner = Wireless/Primary Network: Disabled?

Date Published: 03/14/2013 6:21 AM

Hi, I'm scratching my head at this one, hoping someone has come across this before. I have an SBG6580 that has Wireless capabilities, but they keep getting disabled. Steps:

  • Factory reset the device. Reboot.
  • Wireless -> Primary Network -> Primary Network: Enabled.
  • (few minutes) Cable modem connects successfully to RR.
  • Immediately, Primary Network in step #2 is "Disabled." and grayed out, it cannot be changed to enabled.

I have called TWC to ask them to allow me to set this value on my self-owned modem, they say they do not set configurations that disable it... yet it works fine until successfully connecting to their services.

Firmware: SBG6580-

Does anyone have any information that could assist me?

PS: Yes I've read reviews of how the SBG6580 isn't a great modem and most people use it with NAPT off and bridge it to better devices. However, I can't figure out why this is occurring to start with.

Lastly, Location: Oceanic/Hawaii/Oahu.

I am having the same issue. Did you even manage to find a solution to this?

I was really frustrated by this. Here was my fix. First off, you need the settings backed up from any SBG6580 that has the Primary Network enabled (i.e. gatewaysettings.bin) I had my backup from my old TWC issued SBG6580. So once the new one is successfully registered with your internet provider and you are getting internet access, restore the router settings from the backup. The option to change the primary network will still be unavailable, but it should at least be enabled now.
