Hotspot Shield no longer safe?

Date Published: 09/23/2013 5:19 PM

I remember recently there was some news about Hotspot Shield install file being loaded with a trojan or something by the NSA, negating your anonymity. Not sure exactly what it was but recently I had to reinstall Hotspot Shield.

Since then, there are a few new things I noticed. - I used to verify my ip address by typing into google "what is my ip address" and running whois on the result. Now whenever I do so at www.google.CA, it shows my original IP address attached to my actual ISP. - If I do the same search with www.google.COM , it shows the HSS server. - When I connect to Hotspot Shield servers, it takes one second or less. Pretty much immediate connection. It used to take between 5 and 15 seconds to actually establish the connection with HSS servers, pass around the keys, and update/bind to my new address.

It seems as though it is just 'pretending' to connect, but just instantly switches to green and my ip is the same with google.ca.

Anyone else know about why it no longer will establish a proper connection with HSS and why it no longer properly hides my ip address?

Thank you.
